Habitat for Humanity brings volunteers for the T.G. Howard center

Early Thursday morning, Habitat for Humanity volunteers came out to help with the demolition portion of T.G. Howard Center’s renovation. “We are prepping for the renovations coming in early spring,” said Sammy Poindexter, chairperson of the board for the center. That work was being done by more than just Habitat for Humanity, there were also T.G. Howard volunteers, as well as members of the community.

Jeff Walls from Habitat for Humanity was leading a crew charged with knocking down some of the walls, doing some grading outside and knocking out the chimney. Walls is hoping to have the project ready for spring renovation. Walls also echoed the motto of Habitat for Humanity, “we are a hand up, not a handout.”

Sammy Poindexter made clear that the T.G. Howard Center’s goal is “to serve the community, before serving ourselves.” T.G. Howard through there Tickled Pink campaign that provided supplies for women survivors, and their Backpack Campaign where they gave away school supplies at The Marketplace.

After this renovation, the T.G. Howard center will be offering financial literacy programs, health education and job recruitment. The center will also have a youth academy and provide recreational space. They will also provide rentable meeting spaces.
