To all our volunteers and community folks who helped with the 2020 wreath laying

From the SWVAVCV Executive Board

On Saturday, December 19, 2020 the Volunteers from the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery participated with citizen volunteers from across southwest Virginia in a unique experience of laying 1,350+ wreaths without the help of our beloved veterans’ families. Due to the current pandemic we were unable to provide a public Wreath Laying Ceremony because of COVID-19 restrictions.

On behalf of the Executive Board I want to thank each and every person who came out in the early morning hours, temperatures holding at 25 degrees, to provide this important service. In less than one hour each grave site was decorated with a wreath. Each live holiday wreath stands for Eternal Remembrance and the red bow symbolizes Bravery and Great Sacrifice on behalf of our Veterans.

For those of you who solicited community worker will you, if possible, share our thanks with each of them? We also want to thank the members of our organization who were unable to participate because of personal reasons but who have worked tireless throughout the years to help provide the funds necessary to purchase the wreaths. It has been a long and difficult year for most non-profit organization.

We send a special thanks to Emil Moldovan, American Legion Post 58, Dublin who provided TAPS to signal the start of the wreath laying; many thanks to the Staff of the Cemetery for their support in getting the wreaths ready; to Starbuck, Wytheville, for the much appreciate hot refreshments; David Gravely, The Southwest Times for news coverage of the event and to Michael Henshaw, Director of Cemeteries, DVS, for his attendance and help with laying the wreaths.

We look forward to relief from the pandemic by spring of 2021 and look forward to going forward with our annual fund-raising and other events. Pictures of Saturday’s event can be seen on our website at www.swvavcv.org by next week.

From the Executive Board, I bring you wishes for a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year.

Mary Lou, Chair         Vice Chair, Warren     Treasurer Judy,          Secretary Crosby
