WYTHE COUNTY — An Austinville man is being held without bond on a dozen charges after allegedly fleeing from Virginia State Police Monday morning.

Joshua D. Brown, 37, was seated with a female in a Ford Taurus around 7:20 a.m. when state troopers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a truck stop off Interstate 81 in Wythe County, according to an agency press release.

About five minutes after approaching the couple, a trooper asked Brown, in the driver’s seat, to exit the Taurus. “Brown refused, put the vehicle in drive and narrowly missed running over a trooper standing in front of his vehicle,” states the press release.

In an effort to flee the parking lot, Brown allegedly rammed two trooper vehicles. This started a vehicle pursuit that ended when the Taurus reached the end of a driveway in the 600-block of Major Grahams Road.

Brown then fled the scene on foot. A search conducted by Wythe County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 units from Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office and state police Aviation, Tactical Team led to Brown being arrested by 8:15 a.m. in a field adjacent to the driveway. The 37-year-old female occupant of the vehicle, whose identity was not released, was taken into custody from the vehicle, without incident, state police says.

Brown is charged with three felony counts of assault on a police officer, two felony counts of hit and run, one felony count of eluding police, two felony counts of destruction of property, one count of possession of a firearm while in possession of Schedule I/II narcotics, one count of possession of Schedule II narcotics, one misdemeanor count of destruction of property, and for driving on a revoked license.

Wythe County Sheriff’s Office also had outstanding warrants for Brown, according to the press release. Wythe County Circuit Court records show Brown has active charges of breaking and entering, felony petit larceny and possession of a controlled substance.

General district court files show Brown has nearly a dozen active charges related to possession and distribution of narcotics, including at or near a school or library; possession of a firearm and other weapons at or near a school or library; failure to appear in court and eluding police.

He is being held without bond at New River Valley Regional Jail.
