VSP respond to two accidents in Russell County

Virginia State Police responded to two crashes over the weekend in the Russell County area which resulted in two fatalities.

In a release from VSP Monday, Public Relations Director Corinne Geller reported that an accident Friday, July 31, involving two vehicles resulted in the death of one driver.

At 4:40 p.m. VSP responded to the intersection of Business Route 19 and Route 19 where a 2016 Dodge Ram 2500, which had been traveling south along Route 19, allegedly failed to stop for a red light. As the Dodge proceeded through the intersection, it struck a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek in the side. The Subaru had the green light and was pulling from Route 19 Business onto Route 19 when it was struck.

The driver of the Subaru, Susan A. Stillner, 43, of Rosedall, Virginia, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Dodge, Marvin D. Scalf, 70, of Bluff City, Tennesse, was not injured in the accident. He was also wearing a seat belt. Scalf was later charged with reckless driving.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper P.B. Stevens.

The second accident was reported Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10:30 p.m. on Route 63 in Dante.

Based on the preliminary investigation report, a 2002 Ford truck was traveling along Route 63 when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected and then ran off the left side of the road. The truck continued over an embankment and came to rest upside down approximately 180 feet from the road.

The report indicates that the crash happened several days before the vehicle being discovered Saturday evening. The driver was deceased and the remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for positive identification.

The name of the driver has not been released as of press time and the investigation continues.
