Repairs to begin this week on Cole Mtn. Road

The last issue of The Southwest Times featured a fellow by the name of Kenneth Pearson who aspired to be the “squeaky wheel” that would prompt action from VDOT.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 18, a section of Cole Mountain Road collapsed. The road is still passable, but just barely, and further rains could well result in the rest of the road falling down the adjacent embankment. This was of particular concern to Pearson and others, whose only access to their properties is via Cole Mountain Road.

Officials from VDOT came to assess the situation and left some orange cones along the edge of the roadway so as to warn drivers of the danger.

Pearson was worried that no further action would be taken and so called The Southwest Times to document the barely passable roadway. That was Saturday.

The following Monday, Pearson called the Ingles District County Supervisor, Laura Walters, to make sure she knew about the damaged roadway.

“Ken Pearson called Monday morning and I immediately got in touch with VDOT to get the ball rolling,” said Walters. “They came out Monday afternoon to look at the situation and I’ve kept in touch with them. I spoke with Pearson again Wednesday and again this (Friday) morning.”
