Group offers free ‘butt’ containers

It’s a sight no one likes to see — cigarette butts discarded on sidewalks and streets, eventually making their way into creek beds and lakes.

In its latest campaign to improve Peak Creek and downtown Pulaski, Friends of Peak Creek is offering a limited number of free cigarette butt disposal containers to downtown Pulaski businesses on a first-come, first-served.

Cathy Hanks, FOPC president, said the containers were purchased with a $500 Keep Virginia Beautiful grant for a campaign FOCL is calling “Stash Your Ash!” The funds purchased six containers, half of which already are claimed.

“Cigarette butts are one of the leading causes of litter. They may be small, but they add up,” states a post on FOCL’s Facebook page. “Since every storm drain in Pulaski eventually leads into Peak Creek, when a butt is thrown in the street it will eventually make its way into the stream.”

Hanks said businesses can “adopt” one of the containers to place on the sidewalk outside the business. The only catch is the business must be willing to care for and maintain the containers.

Businesses that have already adopted containers are MOVA Technologies on Main Street, Next Level Virtual Reality on Main Street and Lizard Licks Snowballs in Maple Shade Plaza.

A nonprofit, all-volunteer organization, FOPC’s goal is to enhance and protect Peak Creek.
