Mike Turner/SWT – Senior Hayden Gray goes up for two points Saturday against Blacksburg.

The Cougar basketball team has had its ups and downs this season, but as the regular season end comes into sight, Pulaski County is doing everything they can to move into the River Ridge District tournament on a positive note. Saturday they took another step forward with a 65-56 win over the Blacksburg Bruins.

The Cougars lost the first match up with the Bruins 54-62 back in mid-January. Blacksburg is currently 12-9 after their loss to the Cougars.

With the win Pulaski County moves to 9-10 on the season and improves their standing in the River Ridge District with the district tournament set to begin soon.

The Cougars led 20-16 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Bruins 24-16 in the second quarter to lead 45-32 heading into the halftime break. Blacksburg was able to win the third and fourth quarters, but not by enough to overcome the lead Pulaski County built in the first half. In the end, the Cougars held on for their second win in a row.

Hayden Gray led the Cougar scoring attack with 24 points. Payton Blackburn added 13 points. Josh Bourne scored nine. Luke Russell added six points and JJ Gulley scored four. AJ McCloud chipped in four points. Peyton McDaniel scored three and Nathan Swinney added two.

Kyle O’Neal led the JV Cougars to a 41-38 victory over the younger Bruins with 22 points. He was five of six from the free-throw line and hit three three-pointers. Jayden Crouse added five points by hitting five of six from the charity stripe. Jacob Bourne added three points. Ayden Akers scored three. Nasir Green, Diego Turner, Cam Cooper and Marcus Calloway added two points each in the win. With the win the younger Cougars move to 8-11 on the season and break an eight game losing streak that began Jan. 10 against Hidden Valley.

The two teams will host Patrick Henry Monday, travel to Cave Spring Tuesday and then close out the regular season Thursday, Feb. 13, when they host the Salem Spartans. JV action will begin at 5:30 followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
