WASHINGTON COUNTY — A Tennessee man died Sunday night when his car, stopped in a northbound lane of Interstate 81, was struck by another vehicle.

Charles M. Johnson, 86, of Rogersville, Tennessee, was northbound in a 2015 Nissan Sentra, when his vehicle came to a stop at mile marker 26 in Washington County, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Geller said authorities had received a report of the vehicle moving at an extremely slow speed and without lights on. However, before troopers could reach the Nissan, it came to a stop in the road and was struck by a northbound 2011 Honda CRV.

The driver of the Honda, whose identity wasn’t released, swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the Nissan, but was unable to avoid a collision. The impact with the Nissan caused it to spin off the right side of the road, striking an embankment.

Johnson was wearing a seat belt, but died at the scene. The Honda’s driver was not injured.

The investigation is continuing. Geller said a medical emergency is being considered as a possible factor in the 7:15 p.m. wreck.
