Va. jumps to top for business site selection

After a couple of years in sixth place, Virginia leaped into the top spot in the nation for business site selection.

Gov. Ralph Northam announced Monday “Site Selection” magazine’s annual Prosperity Cup 2019 ranking put Virginia ahead of all other states. The Prosperity
Cup recognizes states having the most competitive state-level economic development team.

“Site Selection” is an international business publication that reports on real estate and economic development.

The publication recognized Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) and its president and CEO, Stephen Moret, for helping to secure Amazon HQ2 in Arlington and a $3 billion expansion at Micron in Manassa.

To determine the ranking “Site Selection” evaluates new and expanded facilities, job creation, capital investment, tax climate, the state’s “Site Selection” Business Climate ranking, performance in Beacon Hill Institute’s State Competitiveness Index, and other factors.

The publication started ranking state economic development programs in 2002. At that time, it was called the “Top Competitive States.” In 2016, it became known as the Prosperity Cup.
