Faculty team extends streak over seniors

In the Seniors versus Faculty basketball game, the faculty team has had a continuous winning streak over the senior squad. Thursday, April 18, they continued that winning streak with an exciting 61-59 overtime win.

In the past, the faculty has only lost two games. However, that doesn’t mean that they are unbeatable. The seniors made an excellent effort to win, and almost succeeded.

The seniors had an outstanding lineup of players that included Darian Allen, Dorian Allen, Dylan Armes, Julian Black, Jaxson Callahan, Ryan Castle, Matthew Click, Austin Crabtree, Rebekah Downey, Breon Hopkins, Zach Johnson, Zach Long, Camden Mariotti, Jairus Miller, Zach Morris, Benjamin Poe and Justin Roberson. The senior team was coached by Evan Danner and Caleb Kirtner.

The faculty also had an all-star lineup, which consisted of Andrew Hart, Rob Colley, Lori Phillips, Jesse Kelly, Brady Deal, Mike Grim, Danah Stoots, Brandon Lawson, Alison Justus, Matthew Dremel, Craig Hodge, Steve Lavery and Joshua Blackburn. The faculty team was coached by Jason Grubb.

Once the game began, both teams were pushing hard for a basket. The first point of the game went to the seniors and was scored by Justin Roberson. The faculty, realizing that this would be a tough game, scored directly after that. As the first quarter came to a close, the score was 15 to 13 with the seniors taking the lead.

The faculty brought their A-game during the second quarter. Both teams played magnificent defense, making it hard to bring the score up. The seniors tried to pull a fast one by having six players on the court, giving the faculty two foul shots and finally bringing up the score. The seniors played hard after that, not wanting the faculty to get ahead by too much. The final score of the second quarter was 26 to 29 with the faculty taking the lead.

During halftime, Brady Deal stated, “We are playing very well! We need to start making more of our open shots and free throws. Once we do that, we’ll be able to take home the win.”

The third quarter had started and both teams were unhappy with the closeness of the score. The faculty was making most of their points by rebounding the ball and carrying it to their basket for a layup. The seniors were playing great defense and rarely left the faulty open for a three-point shot. Once a senior scored, the faculty answered immediately. The faculty eventually got a lead on the seniors, leaving the final score for the third quarter 39 to 43.

The fourth and final quarter brought much anxiety to both teams and the audience. The seniors had managed to tie up the score with a free throw shot by Zach Morris at the eight-minute mark. After that, both teams fought their hardest to get a lead. Neither team were able to get a lead on the other, meaning the fourth quarter ended with a tie of 59 to 59.

During overtime, the defense played by both teams prevented either team from scoring. The seniors, getting antsy, fouled Rob Colley with 11 seconds left of the clock. Colley managed to score his team two points. Neither team scored after Colley’s free throw shots. The final score of the game was 59 to 61 with the faculty taking home the win for another year.
