Christiansburg police don old uniforms for National Police Week

In celebration of National Police Week, May 12-18, Christiansburg Police Department is stepping back to the 1970s by donning the department’s uniforms from that era.

Christiansburg spokeswoman Melissa Demmitt said officers are wearing French light blue shirts with dark blue epaulets (ornamental shoulder decorations) that the department wore from the early 1970s to 1990.

Today, the department also is unveiling a new decoratively wrapped vehicle in honor of Memorial Day.

National Police Week and it accompanying National Peace Officers Memorial Day have been celebrated nationwide since President John F. Kennedy signed the first proclamation in 1962. Its purpose is to recognize and honor “men and women who work to protect our communities, often at great personal sacrifice.”
