Lady Cougars drop pitching duel to Salem



SALEM – Two walks and a single were enough to cost the Lady Cougar softball team a close loss Tuesday in Salem as Pulaski County dropped a 1-0 decision to the Spartans. With the loss the Lady Cougars move to 2-5 on the season.

The pitching battle was a close one, but in the end Spartan starter Reagan Owens did just enough to help her team earn the win. Lady Cougar pitcher Josie Brewer went all six innings giving up four hits, three walks, and one run while striking out 10 Salem batters. Owens went seven innings giving up two hits and one walk while striking out eight Lady Cougar batters.


The Lady Cougars left four runners on base during the contest. Salem stranded seven runners. The Lady Cougars made no errors Tuesday, Salem commited only one.


The two Pulaski County hits came from Jordan Hill and Alexa Nicely. Brewer earned the only Lady Cougar walk of the night.


With seven games in the books, Hill leads the Lady Cougars with six hits, four RBI, four runs scored and one walk in her 18 plate apperances. She holds a .375 batting average. Jordyn Linkous has six hits, one RBI, five runs scored and a walks in 26 trips to the plate and has a .261 batting average. Brewer hasfive hits, including one home run, five RBI, one run scored and six walks in her 26 trips to the box. She holds a .263 batting average. Lakin Smith has five hits, two RBI, three runs scored and a walk in 19 trips to the plate, giving her a .294 average. Other solid batting averages include Shay Jackson (.273), Cheyenne Reed (.250), Lauren Cruise (.200) and MaKenzie Reno (.200).


The Lady Cougars were scheduled to host the Northside Vikings. Friday they will host the Christiansburg Blue Demons. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
