Playing the athletic and quick Patrick Henry Patriots, the Pulaski County Cougars found themselves only down 23-19 at intermission.

That changed, unfortunately, as the Patriots found their range in the second half on the way to defeating the homesteading Cougars 62-45.

Patrick Henry (13-3) got 12 points from Dayshawn Caldwell. He had plenty of help from his teammates as three Patriots scored nine points each. John Stockstill, Jalen Cook and Devon Russell all contributed nine points each and 11 of the 12 Patriot players scored.

The Cougars were blasted when the two squads met at Patrick Henry back in early December by 35 points, 75-40. This night, the Cougars were able to hang tough and had a huge chance to steal the game. They were outscored by 10 points in the final quarter as they saw their record fall to 4-11 overall and 0-8 in district play.

Pulaski County only had one player to hit double digits. Big man Dillon Porter had 14 points underneath and the next Cougar on the list was junior Luke Russell with eight points.

“We had a good chance of getting a big win tonight,“ said Cougar Head Coach Andrew Hart.  “We played well in the first half but we didn’t capitalize on some things in the second half. The Patriots are very athletic and quick. They didn’t shoot that well the first half and we didn’t make them pay for that. Our effort was good, we had a chance to take the game, but we didn’t take it. We had trouble getting by their guys defensively and we once again had trouble putting the ball in the basket.”

The Cougars were outscored 39-26 in the second half. They were only down seven, 39-32, going into the final quarter but the Patriots lit up the scoreboard for 23 points to end the game.

The Pulaski County junior varsity won their third straight as they got 13 points from David Hunley and defeated the young Patriots 54-44. The junior varsity is now 10-5 on the season. Bradley Hudson scored 10 points, Keyontae Kennedy nine and Peyton McDaniel hit two three’s for six points. Patrick Henry was led by Antoine Peyton with 14 points.

The Cougars will go on the road today as they travel to Hidden Valley. The JV game tips at 5:30 p.m. and varsity 20 minutes after the conclusion of the JV game.
