Lady Cougar streak moves to 6 in a row




Pulaski County High School freshman Ally Fleenor put on a Christmas display of her own Wednesday, lighting up the Galax Maroon Tide on her way to scoring a team and game high 26 points to help lead the Lady Cougar basketball team to a 53-41 win in the Galax Christmas Tournament.


“This is our second year in this tournament and we’re excited to be here,” Lady Cougar Head Coach Bradley Sutphin said. “We expect to face some very good competition in this tournament. Our girls need this experience if we want to continue to get better.”


The Lady Cougars jumped out to a quick 14-9 lead at the end of the first period. Fleenor scored eight of those first period points on the strength of a three-pointers, a field goal and three free throws. Junior Alaina Akers also added a three pointer and free throw.


Pulaski County kept the pressure on in the second period, outscoring Galax 9-7. Fleenor added another three-pointer to her effort as the Lady Cougars led 23-16 at the break.


The third period continued to be all about the Lady Cougars as they outscored the Tide 17-14 to lead 40-30 heading into the final period. They capped off their win by outscoring Galax 13-11 in the fourth to earn the 53-41 victory.


Fleenor scored 26 points and added 10 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block for her second double-double in a row. Junior Kassidy Secrist scored six points with two three-pointers, earned a rebound, two assists and a steal. Akers had six points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Junior Maddie Ratcliff added five points, five rebounds, two assists and a block. Freshman Taryn Blankenship scored four points and had nine rebounds and four assists. Junior Hanna Walson scored four, earned two rebounds and had a steal. Freshman Erin Russell had two rebounds. Junior Jaira McNair had two rebounds.


Galax was led by Shay Foxx with 18 points. Essence Brown added 13, Saige Leonard scored six and Ashlyn Brady added four.


The Lady Cougars will be back in action today at 5 p.m. against the winner of the West Stokes vs Allegheny game. Both of those teams are from North Carolina.


In junior varsity action, the younger Lady Cougars easily dispatched Galax 42-8.


Eighth-grader Keslyn Secrist led the way for Pulaski County with 14 points. Freshman Courtney Cregger was right behind her with 13 points. Eighth-grader Paige Huff added eight, sophomore Aubrey O’Dell scored three, freshman Sarah Crabtree scored two and sophomore Anna Fircker added two.


The JV Lady Cougars will be back in action at 4 p.m. today.
