Second man knocked out cold in a week

RADFORD — Authorities are investigating the second case in a week of a man knocked out in the city and left unconscious.

Jenni Wilder, spokeswoman for Radford City, said police do not think the two cases are related “at this time,” even though they were only a few blocks from one another.

Radford City and Radford University police departments have increased patrols in the area as a result of the incidents. Police recommend residents of the area “travel in groups, refrain from excessive alcohol use, and if you see something say something.”

The first incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Aug. 26 in the 1200 block of Lawrence Street and left the victim in critical condition in a Roanoke hospital. An update on his condition wasn’t available.

The second incident was Friday night, around 11 p.m., in the 300 block of Third Avenue.

According to Wilder, police found an unconscious white male lying on the side of the road Friday after responding to a report of a fight in progress. Despite “significant” injuries to the mouth and face, the victim regained consciousness before emergency responders arrived on the scene.

Wilder said witnesses told police a tall male wearing a light-colored hat punched the victim in the face before fleeing the scene on foot with several other people. The victim was lying motionless on the ground when the suspect fled, according to witnesses.

The victim was transferred from New River Valley Medical Center to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information on the incident or suspect is asked to contact Sgt. J. R. Holdaway 540-267-3212 or ‪Jerry.Holdaway@radfordva.gov.

Information on the Aug. 26 incident should be reported to Lt. P.J. Rutzinski at 540-267-3207 or pete.rutzinski@radfordva.gov.

Witnesses told police three to four black males and one white male were involved in that fight.
