DCR needs your help

Staff Report

Trails are growing in popularity; offering individuals, groups and families unobstructed areas to walk, jog, bike and, in some cases, even ride recreational vehicles.
Now, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) seeks to expand the state’s trail base by asking for public proposals for new projects under its Recreational Trails Program (RTP).
DCR reports it has about $1 million in federal funds available for trail projects in the Commonwealth. The matching reimbursement program requires a 20 percent match on the part of the recipient.
Thirty percent of funds are to be used for motorized recreational trails, 30 percent for nonmotorized and 40 percent for multiple use.
Motorized trails can be used by ATVs, dirt bikes, off-road vehicles and other recreational vehicles, while multi-use can be used for bikes, hikes and horses.
Those wishing to submit proposed projects to DCR should do so no later than 4 p.m. July 19 for review. Guidance in the application process is available at www.dcr.virginia.gov/recreational-planning/trailfnd.
RTP was created to construct and rehabilitate recreational trails and their related facilities.
