ROANOKE – A huge first inning punctuated with a grand slam home run helped Lady Cougar Head Coach Jeff Linkous and his squad earn their first win of the season Tuesday on the road in Roanoke, 7-0, over Patrick Henry.

Junior Josie Brewer went the distance on the pitching rubber for Pulaski County, only giving up one hit and five walks while striking out 16 Patriot batters in her seven innings of work.

Her teammates backed her up with their best defensive effort of the season, committing no errors and executing 21 putouts.

At the plate the Lady Cougars only recorded five hits, but added five walks to the tally along with effective base running.

Alexa Nicely led the way at the plate with two hits, two runs scored, but Victoria Goad earned the spotlight hit of the night with her first inning grand slam. Jordyn Linkous added a single, walk and a run scored. Brewer recorded a hit, two walks, an RBI and a run. Mackenzie Reno and Haley Jones each earned a walk.

Nicely started the first inning with a walk, and after an error by the Patriots she moved to second on a Linkous bunt. Brewer walked to load the bases, and then Goad stepped to the plate. The first pitch was sent screaming over the center field fence for the grand slam.

An error allowed Reed to reach first and then second base, and Ratcliffe earned a walk to reach first. Another error helped Sarah Ann Saunders reach first and Reed to score. A ground out by Kasey Johnston scored Ratcliffe, leaving the Lady Cougars up 6-0.

Pulaski County added a final run in the top of the second. Nicely singled to center field and Linkous walked. Brewer hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to allow Nicely to score from second.

Patrick Henry finished the game with one hit and four errors.

The win is the first of the season and first for first-year head coach Jeff Linkous. The Lady Cougars are now 1-6 and are scheduled to host Hidden Valley Friday, April 13, at the Lady Cougar softball field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
