Counties fight for tobacco tax referendum

Pulaski County has joined other counties in seeking authority from the Virginia legislature to hold a referendum vote to gauge public opinion on the levying of a tobacco tax.

Since only towns, cities and two Northern Virginia counties (Fairfax and Arlington) have Virginia General Assembly approval to impose tobacco taxes, County Administrator Jonathan Sweet says the ultimate goal is to put the rest of the state’s counties on equal footing when it comes to taxing authority.

For a number of years, Pulaski County has unsuccessfully sought General Assembly approval to levy a tobacco tax so as to expand its revenue stream beyond real estate and personal property taxes.
