No Lesser Jobs

by Pat Farrell

I know people who do not want to work because they can’t start out “high up” in a company, or a particular job doesn’t pay enough to support their family. God works in mysterious ways, and sometimes you are not sure He is there at all. But, believe me, He doesn’t make mistakes.

I am reminded of the Bible story of Ruth. Ruth lost her husband and ended up in a field gathering grain purposely left by the workers for the poor. This job was not beneath her. She didn’t start out “on top.” It didn’t pay anything, but it not only kept food on her table, it also was a path to her purpose in life. If Ruth had not been in that field, she would have never met the owner, Boaz. Ruth ended up marrying Boaz, and God’s prophecy was fulfilled. She became the grandmother of King David and was in the ancestry line of Jesus Christ.

God may put you in all kinds of places and positions so you can figure out who you are and what you are meant to do. In every place I ever worked, there was a plan. I can look back and see that He was always there. I met people I would have never met, and I learned skills I would have never mastered to make me who I am today.

I was absolutely put in places that didn’t take five minutes to motivate me to want more. At 18 years of age, I ran away and married a boy I hardly knew. I had a high school education; essentially, no skills and no special training of any kind.

My mama got me a job in a textile mill where I inspected drapes. I would stand and walk back and forth folding and cutting strings off of drapes. We were not allowed to talk to co-workers. I had to hold my hand up when I needed a bathroom break, and if I went “too often,” I would be written up. There was a lonely mill whistle that would blow when we started and stopped our shift.

I remember thinking, “Lord, if you will get me out of here, I’ll get myself back in school.” When he opened a door for me, I kept my word. Enrolling in a local community college, I finished a 2-year associate degree nursing program.

God has lessons to teach you so that you can become all He is calling you to be. He is at work in His world, and He wants to use you to fulfill His purpose. There are no lesser jobs; there is work that God wants you to do, and no matter what happens in your life, you are to trust God. He has His hand on you. He has planned your destiny. You have a choice: you can sit home, or you can step out in faith and follow Him.

“And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.” Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.” Ruth 2: 2-3
