‘Just Fix ‘Em’ is foolishness

There are a smattering of yard signs around the county that say, “No New Taxes Just Fix ‘Em.” Folks, this is pure foolishness and deception. Any solution to the middle school problem will require a tax increase. If we could have just fixed the schools without a tax increase we would have done it already.

The schools are in excess of 60 years old, and they are beyond fixing with maintenance and repair. They would require major renovation that would cost literally tens of millions of dollars each. And you can just forget about renovating Pulaski Middle School. It’s not worthwhile or even possible.

The best estimate of renovating and expanding Dublin Middle School to serve as the county’s sole middle school is 87 percent of the cost of a new school. So, the tax increase would be about the same just to renovate one old school that is in an inadequate location as it would be to build the school we want where we want it.

I have studied this issue for six years as a member of the school board and the board of supervisors. I know it as well or better than anyone in the county. We cannot continue to use these two schools as they are. We cannot “just fix” the schools without the major expense of a renovation and expansion of DMS. A renovation and expansion of DMS costs nearly as much as a new school and has a number of problems with its location. A renovation and expansion of DMS would require a large tax increase. The only solution that makes sense is a new Pulaski County Middle School, and the design and location that have been proposed are exceptionally good.

No one likes to pay more in taxes, but ALL of your increased taxes will go to build a very much needed and excellent school that will serve the need of educating our county’s children for many years to come.

Vote Yes for PCMS.
