The Merc event will help build Draper park

Bulldozers are shifting earth at the future Draper Community Park (DCP) as work begins to convert the 6.8-acre former school site into Pulaski County’s newest recreational destination.

While that work goes on, the future park’s board is busy raising money to help fund a pavilion and bathrooms. The $350,000 insurance settlement for the school after a 2011 tornado wasn’t quite enough to cover everything, but the Draper community has been, for the last several months, making plans for completing the park through fundraising.

“Draper school had always been a site for the community,” explains Carol Smith, the board’s chair.  “Dinners were held there for benefits, children played sports there, the basketball court was used by the public.
