Pulaski County students enjoy fresh produce

“Can you buy these at the store?” a first grader at Pulaski Elementary School asks as she takes her first bite of a fresh nectarine.

This was the first time the student had tried the fruit, and her question indicated she liked what she was tasting. Her teacher, Casandra Cox, assured her inquisitive student that she could, indeed, purchase the fruit at a grocery store.

While several students were less than pleased with the snack, just as many were munching down on the smooth-skinned peach.

A new program at Pulaski County Public Schools delivers fresh produce to qualifying schools three days a week. So far, students have enjoyed bananas, apples, grapes, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, celery and cantaloupe.
