Truck crash spills milk near Rural Retreat

Milk Truck CrashBy CALVIN PYNN

A delivery truck hauling milk jugs crashed into a creek just a few miles south of Rural Retreat Monday morning.

The truck tore through a fence as it was traveling along Cedar Springs Road in Wythe County, rolling the vehicle onto its side in a creek that feeds into Reed Creek. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

The crash became a hazardous material cleanup, as both milk and diesel fuel poured into the creek from the wrecked vehicle, endangering the creek’s aquatic life. Emergency crews quickly contained the spill, though, according to Wythe County spokesperson Jeremy Farley.

Cedar Springs Road, located near the intersection of Cline Road, was closed to traffic for much of the day as crews cleaned up the wreck.

Crews on the scene included the Rural Retreat Fire Department, Wythe County Sheriff’s Office, Wythe County Department of Emergency Management, and the Virginia State Police. Officials from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality assisted with the cleanup as well.
