PAT adding Christiansburg route

If Pulaski Area Transit offers a ride to Christiansburg on April 1, it won’t be an April Fool’s joke.

Starting April 1, PAT will run routes to New River Valley Mall and the Christiansburg campus of New River Community College twice a day Monday through Friday.

The new route is being offered on a trial basis during April, May and June to determine whether ridership will support the trip. If there is sufficient ridership, the route will continue.

The first run will leave from Hardee’s in Pulaski at 7:20 a.m. Following regular stops in Dublin and Fairlawn, the bus will arrive in Christiansburg at 8:50 a.m. The second run leaves the Pulaski Hardee’s at 12:30 p.m., and arrives at the mall in Christiansburg at 1:50. Riders on the second route will be responsible for arranging return transportation to Pulaski County.

“The route will be monitored closely, and changes will be made, if needed, to meet passenger needs and budget constraints,” PAT transit manager Gary Heinline said.

The fare, each way, is $4 from Pulaski and Dublin to Christiansburg, and $2 from Fairlawn to Christiansburg. Children 12 or under ride free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Pulaski Town Council started PAT in 2004 with assistance from Pulaski County Board of Supervisors. Since that time, it has continued to grow and expand transportation offerings in Pulaski County.

Heinline said having a route connecting Pulaski and Christiansburg was an original goal that the organization now hopes to meet. By working with Radford and Blacksburg’s transit systems, this new route will open new opportunities for citizens.

Heinline acknowledged and expressed appreciation to Pulaski Town Council, Pulaski County Board of Supervisors and Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for the help and support that has allowed PAT to grow.
