Kathy Cooley has been selected as the Service Excellence Employee of the Month for January at LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski. The award recognizes outstanding employees who demonstrate service excellence beyond their job description.

Cooley has worked at LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski for almost 35 years. She works for the lab as a section coordinator for the chemistry department. She is often called upon for her expertise.

One mother nominated Cooley for the care she provided to her infant daughter who needed to have her blood drawn.

“When one staff member was unsure of being able to get a good stick, she asked Kathy to perform the procedure,” said Michelle Poore. “Kathy was a pro. She found a good vein and with one quick stick was able to get enough blood for all of the tests that were ordered. My daughter barely even had a mark on her arm. I had a traumatic experience at another hospital with my son and can appreciate how difficult drawing blood from infants can be. As a mother, it made such a difference that we had a quick experience that was as painless as possible. ”

This type of feedback is not uncommon for Cooley.

“Kathy is one of our most dependable staff members and can be counted on to get the job done,” said Terena Scott, director of laboratory services. “She is very friendly and always has a smile on her face and is often requested by patients.”

The Service Excellence Employee of the Month is selected using the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates exemplary individual achievement, contribution and performance in their jobs and other related duties beyond their own job description.
  • Inspires and supports the organization’s ICARE Values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude toward responsibilities, co-workers and customers, and serves as a role model for others.
  • Exercises servant leadership, takes initiative, and accepts and carries out additional responsibilities beyond the regular job assignments for the good of the organization.

Christy Jones, R.N., emergency department, was also nominated for the monthly award.
