CHRISTIANSBURG — A 50-year-old Christiansburg man was killed Saturday when he attempted to abandon and overturning forklift to run for safety.

Robert Joseph Tucker was operating the forklift while a 22-year-old man was inside its elevated bucket, trimming trees in the 1,000 block of Radford Road, according to Christiansburg spokeswoman Becky Wilburn.

She said witnesses indicated Tucker “attempted to exit the cab and run to safety as the machine started to turn over, but (he) was struck by the elevated bucket.”

The man who was in the bucket was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Authorities declined to release his identity so as to protect his privacy. Therefore, the status of his condition cannot be obtained.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) was on the scene of the 11:20 a.m. incident and is continuing to investigate.
