WYTHEVILLE — Dr. John Woods started his first day of work on Monday as the inaugural Executive Director for Downtown Wytheville Inc. after being selected by the organization’s Board of Directors.

Woods brings many years of experience in downtown revitalization to his new position, Kimber Simmons, the Associate Director of the IDA of Wythe County, said in a release. He has worked as a Main Street director in cities such as Buckeye, Arizona and Hammonton, New Jersey.

He also worked as a community development planner at the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center. While there, Woods worked extensively with the Town of Pearisburg on projects geared towards revitalizing their downtown area, Simmons said.

Woods received his Bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly Pomona, and his Master’s and Doctorate from Virginia Tech. Most recently, he worked as a Community Revitalization Consultant in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Dr. Wood’s proven success with renovating downtown areas and his love for Southwest Virginia make him a perfect fit for our organization as we continue our efforts to revitalize Downtown Wytheville,” said Downtown Wytheville Board President Tommy Hundley. “I look forward to working with John to renovate our Beautiful Downtown Wytheville.”

Woods and his wife are currently in the process of moving back to Southwest Virginia as he has started his new job.

“I look forward to working with the business community, local leaders and volunteers to help Downtown Wytheville build upon its history and strengths as the heart of Wythe County and the surrounding region,” said Woods.
