Christiansburg woman charged with obtaining money by false pretenses

CHRISTIANSBURG – A Christiansburg woman raised a total of $7,000 by feigning illness before her arrest on Tuesday, June 10.

Veronica Rae-Ann Garcia, 26, was accused of telling people she had cancer and was unable to afford treatment or insurance, Christiansburg spokeswoman Becky Wilburn said in a news release Tuesday. She has been charged with one count of obtaining money by false pretense, which is an unclassified felony.

An online fundraising website was set up to cover Garcia’s health expenses. She collected around 40 donations totaling $7,000, Wilburn said.

Investigators discovered that Garcia had received approximately $1,500 of the $7,000 raised.

She was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond later that day.
