One man charged in Blacksburg drug bust

One man has been charged after police uncovered a drug lab at University Terrace Apartments in Blacksburg this past weekend.

The man, Jerelle Downing, 23, has been charged with possession with the intent to distribute a schedule one drug, as well as conspiracy to manufacture a schedule one drug. According to Sgt. Nathan O’Dell of the Blacksburg Police Department, the lab was set up to make dimethryltyptamine, a powerful hallucinogenic drug known more commonly known as DMT.

The incident occurred last Friday evening, May 2, just after 5 p.m., when officers from the Blacksburg Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia Tech PD executed a search warrant at University Terrace’s 1203 building on Progress St.

According to O’Dell, the warrant was the result of a drug investigation by the New River Regional Drug Task Force (NRRDTF). Officers encountered a drug lab, and around 20 to 30 residents were evacuated from the apartment shortly afterward.

Police, fire, hazardous material, and rescue teams stayed on the scene for several hours into the night to remove the lab.

At this point, no residents from University Terrace Apartments have reported any symptoms or injuries from the incident, or the drug lab in the building. The NRRDTF is continuing to investigate, and further charges could occur depending on what the investigation reveals.
