A day after Tommy Hale was named the new head coach at Fort Chiswell, one of his former assistants from Carroll County was named as the new head coach of the George Wythe Maroons.

Brandon Harner, who spent the past 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Carroll County High School, was officially approved by the Wythe County School Board Friday.  This will be his first head coaching position.  Prior to becoming an assistant coach at Carroll County he was also a student and player for the Cavaliers.  Indications were that he planned to meet soon with his new players.

Coach Harner will be taking over for former Head Coach H.S. Ingo, and will be leading a program that can expect to see positive results in the coming season.  The Maroons won the Group 1A State Championship in 2012.  They finished last season with a 6-5 record, falling in the first round of the playoffs to Galax by a final score of 51-20.

The Maroons are also members of the Group 1A West Conference 46, and are aligned with the old Hogoheegee District.

Their current Conference alignment will put them in playoff competition Fort Chiswell, Radford, Galax, Auburn, Rural Retreat, Narrows, Bland, Patrick Henry – Glade Springs, and 15 other schools.
