State park offers family-friendly adventures



With the arrival of spring weather, Claytor Lake State Park has a variety of family-friendly, self-guided adventures to kick off the new season and provide some Spring Break fun for students.

The lake is offering three programs that provide a variety of outdoor fun:

•Explore the Outdoors Brochures!

This TRACK Trail adventure, which runs year round, helps children use self-guided brochures to explore Sandy Ridge Trail through adventures such as Birds of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Nature’s Hide and Seek, The Need For Trees and Tree Tales.  Brochures can be picked up at the head of the trail or at

•Spring Break Bingo and Scavenger Hunt

This twist on Bingo, which runs through April 27, encourages participants to locate a furrowed tree and look for the remains of a squirrel’s feast. Bingo cards and maps for the scavenger hunt are available at the park’s office on weekdays and at Water’s Edge Gift Shop on weekends.

•Virginia State Park’s Birding Adventure Geocache

This year’s annual summer geocache features the northern flicker, a member of the woodpecker family. Participants can bring their own GPS unit or rent one at the park office on weekdays and Water’s Edge Gift Shop on weekends.
