Gary Mitchell Peterson

Gary Mitchell Peterson, 66, of Hiwassee, Va., passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Pulaski, Va., Dec. 5, 1947 and was the son of the late Shirley Mitchell Peterson and Mabel Chumbley Peterson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James, Donald and Thomas Peterson and by a sister, Dr. Sue P. Conrad. He was a machinist for Long Airdox. Gary will be remembered as kind, gentle and soft-spoken. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and Paw Paw. His grandchildren were the love of his life. He was particularly proud of the home in the country that he built for his family. It served as the meeting place for many family gatherings and the visiting place for many nieces, nephews and friends. Many wonderful memories were made there. He will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Queen Peterson; children and spouses, Kelly P. and Clay Howlett, Scott and Keri Peterson; sisters, Jane Morris and Nancy Bond; brother, Bob Peterson; four grandchildren, Thomas and Maely Howlett, and Ellie and Carter Peterson and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Monday, March 31 at 11 a.m. from Cecil’s Chapel Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Farris officiating. The family received friends Sunday evening at Stevens Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers are appreciated and the family wishes memorial gifts be sent to the American Heart Association, 4504 Starkey Road SW, Suite 115, Roanoke, Va.

    Gary was such a kind and wonderful person, I will miss talking to him on the phone. He was always sweet and willing to give his all. May his family remember him with such kindness and his LOVE of FAMILY.
