Galax came into the Cougar Den hoping to put an end to the streak that the junior varsity Lady Cougars have been working on.  Despite a solid first half effort, they proved to be no match in the end, falling by a final score of 65-34.

Pulaski County jumped out to a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Maroon Tide wouldn’t throw in the towel just yet.  The Lady Cougars outscored Galax 12-10 in the second quarter to take a 25-20 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw the Lady Cougars tighten down the defense and open up the offense, outscoring Galax 16-6.  Leading 41-26 at the start of the fourth quarter, there was absolutely no mercy given.  Pulaski outscored Galax 24-8 in the final quarter to earn the 65-34 victory.

Helen Counts led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 16 points.  Two other Lady Cougar players also hit double digits, with Savannah Coffey adding 12 points and Alexis Phillips scoring 11 points.  Amanda Alley scored 6 points.  Tyanna Haynes and Karlie Thompson scored 4 points each, and Amiah Stables added 3 points.  Taylor Dickerson, Rakia Mattox, Lexy Hurst and Michelle Hernandez scored 2 points each, and Laney Cox scored 1 point.

The Lady Cougars recorded 15 steals, 15 defensive rebounds, and 11 offensive rebounds in the contest.  Hurst, Phillips, and Counts each recorded one block.

The JV Lady Cougars will be back in action tonight at 5:30 against Carroll County.

    Coach Alley,
Congrats on this victory and last night’s upset of Carroll County! Your three sets of five players throughout the game provided you with fresh legs against a tough team yesterday. I heard all the details about it in downtown Hillsville today. All your team’s hard work is paying off. I also heard great reviews of the 8th graders that joined the team. Keep up the good work.
