State Police sergeant killed in wreck




HENRY COUNTY – A sergeant with Virginia State Police’s Area 24 office in Martinsville died Saturday as the result of injuries received in a car crash.

According to State Police Spokeswoman Corinne Geller, Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi was working the overnight shift within the Salem Division when his Chevrolet Impala patrol vehicle crashed into a road sign. He was still seated in the vehicle when rescue arrived on the scene, on Chatham Road/Route 57, just after the approximately 2:20 a.m. wreck.

Phillippi was transported to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause and circumstances of the crash.
