Boy Scouts win first place in Klondike Derby



Several scouts from Boy Scout Troop 249 of the BSA New River District placed first in the 2014 Klondike Derby.

The winners included scouts Joseph Shaver, Hunter Riddle, Michael Sparta, Daniel Umberger, Henry Fink, Michael Clayton, Ryan Umberger.

According to a news release from Mark Alley, assistant scoutmaster for Troop 249, the Klondike Derby is a competition held every January to test Scout Skills. This year’s events included the tomahawk toss, pole climbing with lineman gear, fire building, and skeet shooting.

In the release, Alley said that having the competition in freezing weather teaches youth how to adapt, survive. He also said it helps them learn how to overcome obstacles in sub freezing temperatures by camping.
