Newbern Cemetery tour focuses on Civil War soldiers

Newbern Cemetery TourThe public is invited to come out to Newbern Cemetery Friday, Oct. 18, for a guided tour focusing on Civil War soldiers.

Local historian April Danner will lead the 5:30-6:30 p.m. tour, sponsored jointly by Smithfield Plantation in Montgomery County and Wilderness Road Regional Museum. Donations to benefit Smithfield and the WRRM are welcomed.

Danner, head interpreter and education outreach coordinator for Smithfield, has been researching graves of Pulaski County’s early residents. As a local contact person for The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, she is especially interested in Civil War soldiers buried in Newbern Cemetery.

Danner will present these soldiers’ histories as she leads visitors through the historic cemetery that adjoins Newbern Community Christian Church property on Newbern Road.  Background will be provided on notable figures such as Benjamin Franklin Wysor, Lt. Col. R.D. Gardner, and Lt. Col. Poage.

Since 2004, Danner has been locating and maintaining area cemeteries while learning about Civil War troops buried in them. She began this work while completing a master’s degree in history, studying under well-known Civil War historian James Roberson at Virginia Tech.

Those interested in the tour may park in the Newbern Community Christian Church lot.
