Infant body found in closet, police investigating

CHRISTIANSBURG – Authorities are investigating the cause of death for an infant whose decomposing body was found inside a closet in a Christiansburg residence Friday, Sept. 27.

Spokeswoman Becky Wilburn said Christiansburg Police Department obtained a search warrant for a home in the 100 block of East Street after learning a female patient at LewisGale Hospital-Montgomery allegedly was denying recently giving birth “despite showing signs to the contrary.”

Officers searched the home around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, and found “the decomposed remains of an infant wrapped in a bag and concealed in a closet within the home.”

Wilburn said the remains were sent to the Roanoke medical examiner’s office for evaluation.

“While the discovery is considered suspicious, it is unclear at this time whether foul play was involved,” Wilburn said in a press release issued Wednesday. She said the identity of the woman is not being released because no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
