NRCC schedules fall Sharper Skills seminars

New River Community College’s “Sharper Skills Seminars” for business will continue this fall with several workshops scheduled for October.

Topics will include Microsoft Office Specialist Certification, Microsoft Office 2013, team building, social media for business, and getting started with the iPad. Many of the topics will also be of interest to those in non-profit organizations.

NRCC corporate trainer Jeanne Symanoskie will instruct each workshop at the college’s New River Valley Mall site in Christiansburg.

Her workshop “Office 2013: What’s New” will look at the latest release of Microsoft’s Office suite and discuss the new look, customizing the Office “ribbon” and other enhancements. In “Microsoft PowerPoint: Master Slides and Advanced Features” topics include creating and manipulating master slides, using object linking, embedding, and hyperlinking slides.

Three of the upcoming workshops will cover topics related to the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exam. “MOS Certification: Just the FAQs” will explore the competencies necessary for obtaining MOS certification, discuss different types of certification and examine testing strategies. “MOS Certification Prep: Word” will focus on reviewing core concepts related to the MOS Word exam, including document properties, paragraph settings, manipulating graphics and mail merge. Similarly, “MOS Certification Prep: Excel” will review core concepts covered on the MOS Excel exam, including AutoFill, formatting, page layout, charts and conditional formatting.

Also in October, Symanoskie will offer “Team Building,” “Social Media for Business” and “Getting Started with iPad.” Her team-building seminar will describe the concept of a team and factors for success, discuss the four phases of team development and list possible team building activities for use in business.

“Social Media for Business” will explore tips and tricks to manage social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and LinkedIn. In “Getting Started with iPad,” Symanoskie will guide users through the home screen, discuss syncing devices with iTunes, and address how to manage settings, the App Store and more.
