Pulaskian 2nd in state shooting championship

MEADOWS OF DAN – Barry Moore Jr. of Pulaski was the runner-up in the Virginia sporting clays championship held last weekend at Primland resort at Meadows of Dan.

Moore shot 185 out of 200 targets to finish just behind champion James McGowan of Herndon, who shot 187. Moore won $500 for his efforts, while McGowan received $1,000.

More than 200 amateur shooters took part in the four-day event, sponsored by the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA). Competitions included 50 bird sub-gauge events in .410, 20, and 28 gauges; pump gun and side-by-side; a five-stand event featuring 50 targets, and a 50-bird FITASC (acronym for a French title).

Third place went to David Collins Jr. of Ruther Glen, who finished only three targets behind McGowan.

The top female shooter was Michelle Quesenberry of Hillsville, followed by Vickie Smith of Springfield in second and Patricia Painter of Galax in third.

High Overall Average among Open competitors went to Richard Cheek of Greensboro, N.C. Runner-up was Wesley Elliott of Booneville, N.C.
