Claytor Lake Triathlon approaching

Tri-Adventure Sports will hold its 3rd annual Claytor Lake Triathlon at Claytor Lake State Park in Dublin scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14 2013.

This year, The Friends of Claytor Lake are not just helping with the event, they are running it. Having Executive Director Jeff Caldwell, Board of Director Jeff Arnold, and Jeff Caldwell’s daughter Tori Ramsey run as a mixed relay team.

The idea for the Claytor Lake Triathlon started in 2010 when co-owner of the Bike Barn, Johnny Garrett, approached the owner of Pulaski Bikes, Mike McMillion, and Claytor Lake State Park manager Chris Doss, and chief ranger, Matt Wright, about the possibility of organizing a triathlon that could be held on the open water, as opposed to a swimming pool, and in a suburban environment, away from urban traffic. The vision was shared and they held their first event on Sept.10, 2011. With only one month of promotion, the event attracted 52 participants.

During the planning stages for the 2012 Claytor Lake Triathlon, TriAdventure joined in and took the lead role as race coordinators. One year later, on Sept. 22, 2012, they held their 2nd annual Claytor Lake Triathlon, which hosted 157 individual competitors and 17 relay teams.

Ramsey, an experienced high school swimmer with the Radford Bobcats and H2okies will be swimming the 500 meter portion of the race. She will be handing the torch off to Arnold, who will be biking the 12.5 miles around Claytor Lake.  Arnold will then turn things over to Caldwell who will finish the race with a 5k run throughout the Claytor Lake State Park. Caldwell has recently been training for both a half and full marathons.

The goal is to raise money for The Friends of Claytor Lake and their lake clean up program as well as all other programs in which they are involved. For more information or to donate funds, visit
