Fundraisers organized in support of local cancer patient

A local 34-year-old woman recently diagnosed with stage four cancer with no known point of origin is having two fundraisers held in her honor.

Sundy Joy Warf of Dublin, daughter of Robert and Shirley Warf, also of Dublin, received the medical news just weeks ago.

Sundy is a 1997 graduate of Pulaski County High School, and a 2001 graduate of Radford University. She has two loving sisters, Robyn Warf Taylor and Angel Warf Patterson, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Warf’s boyfriend, Michael Maxwell, has been by her side providing support throughout this trying time.

Warf recently fell ill with what she assumed was a cold, which developed into what doctors thought was pneumonia, which was eventually diagnosed as whooping cough. The violent cough caused her lung to collapse. She went in for more testing and they found cancer in the lungs and the lymph nodes. Upon further testing, it was determined the cancer had spread to many different areas of her body.

Warf went to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn., where doctors ordered radiation medication which she began July 15, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Warf’s doctors are still waiting on test results to return from California in hopes of finding the origin(s) of the cancer. At that point, they can start aggressive chemotherapy treatment.

Warf has a multitude of friends who have banded together to organize a fundraiser to help cover the growing costs of her much needed treatment. A fundraiser is currently being conducted online at

The site allows donors to make donations via credit or debit card, with the option to leave your name and a personalized message, or to donate anonymously. So far, nearly $5,000 has been raised. Anyone wishing to make a donation by check instead, can mail and make check payable to Sundy Warf’s Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 2794, Roanoke, VA 24001.

There will also be a fundraising event, “Fundy for Sundy,” sponsored by Center in the Square and many other donors, at Center in the Square, Roanoke, July 26 at 7 p.m. Warf has been a faithful employee of Center in the Square approximately eight years.

There will be a karaoke party and silent auction to raise money. A suggested minimum $5 donation will be collected for Warf at the door. There will be a cash bar available and a meal will be served. All who can make it are encouraged to come to this event in support of Warf.

Sundy is such an amazing person. Inside and out; she is beautiful and has always been there to support those around her. I think now is the time we can return this favor to her. Please come out and show your support!

There are not many people out in the world today that are so sweet & thoughtful to everyone but I am so thankful that I am related to her & that she is my loving cousin, Sundy the youngest of three daughters of Bobby & Shirley Warf. She has the most gentle & kind spirit of anyone you would ever want to meet. She has an abundance of the same friends she has had since Elementary School plus many more she has met along the way in college & at The Center in the Square in Roanoke where she is their Event Planner. This is a job she absolutely loves and is perfect for because of her energetic & wonderful out-going personality. Everyone in downtown Roanoke knows who she is from her beautiful smile at the Center. Let’s all get together & help her out financially as she goes through a very long ordeal of many different cancer treatments. This young woman is certainly worth it & would thank everyone from the bottom of her heart. Thank you Southwest Times so much for featuring this story about Sundy & let’s all pray for her & her devoted family at this difficult time. There is also a special event planned for her through The Center in the Square on July 26 so lets all go out & show her our support!! Thank you all so much!
