Cougars get first road win

Galax – The Cougar basketball team traveled to Galax Monday night and came away with their first road win of the season, winning 47-36 over the Maroon Tide.

Playing the State Champions for the second time in less than a week, the Cougars fought from behind after being down 12-10 after the first quarter and 22-19 at half time.

Coach Mark Hanks said, “we came from behind tonight, and thats is a good sign for us.  Anytime you go on the road and bring back a victory it’s good for the kids confidence.”

The third period saw the Cougars outscored the Maroon Tide 14-6 to go up 33-28.  Pulaski put an exclamation point on the victory with a 14-8 fourth quarter.

The Cougars had balanced scoring in the game, with Lonnie Mattox, Cameron Merchant and Tyler Blevins all scoring eight points each.  Marcus Johnston and Blevins each had five rebounds.  Blevins played perhaps his best overall game of the season, and led the team with three assists.

Pulaski County is now 2-3 on the year, and Galax falls to 0-3.  Coach Hanks said, “we had balance scoring tonight and did some other things well.  We still have lots of things  to improve  on.”

The junior varsity Cougars saw their record improve to 3-2 as they beat the Galax Junior varsity 38-34. Cougar JV head coach J. R. Montgomery said, “we played well at times and came away with victory. ”

The Cougars will take on the undefeated Carroll County Cavaliers tonight at the Cougar Den.  On Friday the Cougars will play the Radford Bobcats in the Cougar Den.  JV action will get underway at 5:30, and the varsity games are set to begin at 7:00 each night.
