Deviled eggs to be judged








Deviled eggs might be one of the most common foods found at picnics and family reunions, but they’ll soon have the chance to earn someone a year’s supply of Eggland’s Best Eggs.

The Virginia Egg Council is inviting contestants to enter their best deviled egg recipes in its “Tasty Little Devils 2012 Recipe Contest” to be held at New River Valley Fair.

Prizes will be awarded in first, second and third place, but more importantly, the top three winners will be eligible to compete in the State Finals to be held at Virginia’s state fair Sept. 19.

The first place finisher in the local contest will receive Eggland’s Best Eggs for a year, while second and third each receive EB eggs for six months.

The contest is open to Virginia residents, but the contestant does not have to live in the county where the fair is held.

Participants must prepare a minimum of six large eggs. Although the recipe must be for deviled eggs, presentation of the final product may vary. For example, the deviled eggs can be baked in a casserole after being prepared.

Entries must be presented in or on a container, but they will not be left on display since they should not be kept at room temperature for longer than two hours.

The recipe must accompany egg entries, with ingredients listed in order of use. Preparation instructions, cooking times and temperatures must be included on the recipe.

A written copy of the recipe also must be printed on one side of a piece of paper and accompany the entry form. The back of the recipe page must include the name of the recipe and the contestant’s name, address, telephone number and email address.

The competition is open to adults only.

Judging is based on flavor, creativity, texture, appearance, fulfillment of recipe requirements and appropriateness of ingredients.

Prizes given in the state competition are $375 for first place; $250 for second, and $125 for third.
