Maroons rain on Pioneers, 34-0

Fort Chiswell — It was a rainy night in Fort Chiswell and lighting delayed the game for 45 minutes. Once the game did start , the George Wythe Maroons rained on the Pioneers, by defeating them 34-0.
Fort Chiswell was held to just 17 yards rushing for the game, as the Maroons rushed for 288 yards.
The Pioneers head coach Stephen James said, “ We couldn’t run and we couldn’t control the clock.”
Fort Chiswell held their own in the first quarter, as the two teams exchanged punts. The only score of the first half came when Fort Chiswell fumbled on their own 37. On their first play the Maroons handed the ball off to Isac Young, he stutter stepped at the line of scrimmage and bounced outside , as he raced 37 yards to pay dirt and Mikel Hawkes PAT split the uprights with 9:07 showing before the half.
The Maroon “ D “ held Fort Chiswell to one yard rushing in the first half, on 14 carries.
George Wythe would go up 14 – 0 with 6:28 to go in the third quarter when, Isaac Baltazar intercepted a Cory Mabry pass at the Wythe 21 and zig zagged his way down the field with a 79 yard touchdown, and Hawkes PAT was good.
The Maroons went up 21-0 as running back John Tolley took the hand off and galloped 20 yards for the score, with 1:52 left in the quarter.
On Fort Chiswells next possession they went three downs and out. George Wythe then blocked the Pioneer punt and took over at the Fort Chiswell 12. Two plays later Tolley would bull his way into the end zone from three yards out as the point after failed for a 27-0 lead, with eleven minutes left in the game.
After another Pioneer turnover this one on an interception by Shaq Calfee , the Maroons were in business again. Mitch Castanon went in from two yards out and Hawkes put the score up to 34-0 with 7:04 to go.
Coach James said, “ We gave up two or three touchdowns on turn overs, we just didn’t move the ball. They , George Wythe have four guys capable of big plays and are threats anywhere on the field. I thought we did a good job in the first half defensively . I liked our effort , but it’s going to be a long season if we don’t start running the football.”
He finished by saying, “ We must get better and I need to coach them better.”
The Maroons John Tolley had 118 yards rushing on just eight carries. Isaac Young rushed for 102 yards on nine carries.
The pioneers meager running attack was lead by Trey Jackson , who had 13.yards on five carries. Ray Rodriguez rushed thirteen times for minus ten yards. Quarterback Cory Mabry rushed the ball seven times for 12 yards. He also was 7 of 16 passing for 68 yards and threw two interceptions. The Pioneers turned the ball over five times , with three interceptions and two fumbles and one blocked punt.
Next week the Pioneers host the Marion Hurricanes, kick off is slated for 7:30.
NOTE: Fort Chiswells Junior Varsity beat Floyds Junior Varsity 28-0. Brett Mabry and Patrick Biedlemen both scored two touchdowns each.
