Wythe County rivals clash Friday

MAX MEADOWS– One county, two schools and a lot of enthusiasm for both. The George Wythe Maroons come to Fort Chiswell this Friday to take on the Pioneers. The Maroons {1-0} won last week, 63-3 over Tazewell, and in fact were up, 42-3 at halftime. The Pioneers are looking for their first victory of this young season.
Some say these two teams aren’t the best of friends.
Pioneer head coach Stephen James says, “The Maroons have a lot of good athletes. They also have very good football players, a lot of skilled players and are fundamentally sound.”
George Wythe offensively will run the wing T, jet sweep and trap formations. Coach James remarked, ”Their quarterback throws well and it’s hard to key on just one person, they are all equally used.”
On defense the Maroons will show you a 4-3 with a cover 2 look. Coach James said, “They will be very aggressive and will come at you.”
One good thing came out of the Pioneers , Rural Retreat game and that was the fact that Fort Chiswell has no injuries. Coach James remarked, “Our egos are hurt and look for some changes on both sides of the football.”
Kick off is slated for 7:30 pm at Fort Ciswell.
