James Monroe Hanks (03-08-2010)
James Monroe Hanks, called by Gene or Pepper, age 86, went home to be with Jesus Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Pulaski Community Hospital. He was retired from R.A.A.P. after 20 years of service. Mr. Hanks was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Bell Hanks, by a granddaughter Alice Mae Wade, by a son-in-law George Owens. He was also preceded by a brother Lonnie Hanks, by 3 step-brothers Arnold, Malvin and Fizer Frazier, by sisters Stella Chandler, Ethel Burcham and Marie Crowder.
He was a member of the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer, Pulaski. Surviving are: Left to cherish his memory - Daughters & Sons-In-Law - Mae & Raymond Chinault, Wanda & Bobby Southern, Jo Ann Owens; 7 Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great-Grandchild; 1 Precious Little Friend - Kiwi Goodson; Brothers & Sisters-in-Law - Luther & Louise Hanks; Dennis & Marie Hanks; Donald & Fern Hanks; Sisters & Brothers-In-Law - Elene Pope, Katherine & Kyle Frazier, Myrtle & Russsell Bridge.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dale Akers and the Rev. Randall Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Saturday from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer, Case Knife Rd., Pulaski, VA 24301.

Larry Wayne "Buffalo" Barnette (03-08-2010)
Larry Wayne “Buffalo” Barnette, age 55 was of Hope Mills, NC and formerly Pulaski. After many courageous battles the Lord took Larry, our son and brother March 3, 2010.
Born October 15, 1954 in Pulaski, he is the son of Lelia Mae Boardwine Barnette and the late Glenn Harold Barnette. Larry was a graduate of Pulaski High School and New River Community College. He was an employee of DuPont/DAK in Fayetteville, NC.
He is survived by his Mother – Lelia Mae Boardwine Barnette, Pulaski; Sisters & Brother-in-law – Bonnie Werner, Bluefield, VA; Gayle & Steve Buchanan, Pulaski; Brother & Special Sister-in-law – Jimmy Harold Barnette & Brenda, Dublin; and loving nieces & nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday 11:00 A.M. at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin with Rev. Harry Gunter officiating. Alfred Curtis Graham (03-08-2010)
Alfred Curtis Graham, age 87 of Dublin, died Thursday evening March 4, 2010 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born November 13, 1922 in Floyd County, VA and was the son of the late Pearl Yates Graham and Andrew Lester Graham. He was a veteran of W.W.II having served in the U.S. Navy, was a graduate of V.P.I. and S.U. class of 1949, and was an avid Hokie fan for over 60 years. Curtis owned the Western Auto Store in Dublin during the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s. Curtis retired from Ruritan National with over 30 years of service, having served as Assistant Executive Secretary, and Acting Executive Director for a period of time. He was a charter member of the Ruritan Road Club, and served in all major club offices including the Dublin and Ruritan Road Clubs, and New River District Governor in 1965. He was also a 49-year member of the Henry Clay Masonic Lodge #280 A.F.&A.M. in Dublin, was a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, a member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He was also a member of Toastmasters International, where he served in a variety of positions.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Helen Smith Graham of Dublin: a daughter; Sandy Myers and her husband Keith of Roanoke: a son; Robbie Graham and his wife Jaime of Dublin: a sister; Virginia Jones and her husband Franklin of Radford. He is also survived by two grandsons, Scott Myers and Gregory Myers.
Funeral services will be held Monday March 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dublin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeanette Tagg officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens where the V.F.W. Post 1184 will conduct military honors and Henry Clay Lodge #280 will conduct Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends Sunday at the church from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Curtis displayed his love to all, but more especially to his family, and was always a very optimistic leader in the community. Curtis never met a stranger and always had a smile and a handshake for everyone! Marie McFadden Ward (03-08-2010)
Marie McFadden Ward, age 99, of Richmond and formerly of Pulaski and Dublin, died Tuesday March 2, 2010 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. She was born July 2, 1910 in St. Francis, Kansas, and was the daughter of the late Fannie Grace Buel McFadden and John Looker McFadden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John James Ward and eleven siblings. She was a member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church, had been a previous instructor at New River Community College in Upholstery. She and her husband John were owners and operators of their own business called “Wards Upholstery” on Washington Avenue in Pulaski.
She is survived by one daughter: Lavon Ward Albert of Richmond: a granddaughter; Jonda Albert Taylor and her husband Larry of Richmond: two great-grandsons; Brian Preston Taylor and his wife Christine of Mastic, NY, and Adam Michael Taylor and his wife Julie of Lancaster, PA: three great great-grandchildren; Annabelle Marie Taylor, Alyson Marie Taylor and Brendon Taylor.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Pamela Clark-Egan officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends Tuesday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. service time. Betty Gertrude Smith Watson (03-05-2010)
Betty Gertrude Smith Watson, age 84 formerly of Allisonia passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the Pulaski Health Care Center.
Born January 31, 1926 in Allisonia, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Smith and Laura Frances Warden Smith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Watson and a number of sisters and brothers. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, & grand nieces and grand nephews, Special friends Rochelle & Curtis Smythers and Ed & Robin Sykes-all of Allisonia.
She was a member of the Farris Mines Christian Church where she served as a past chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was the first to receive an award from the Pulaski County Agency on Aging and she was recognized as being one of the first “Home Town” Hero’s in our community.
Funeral services will be Friday 11:00 A.M. in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Dennis Trail and Rev. Frankie Graham officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bower Funeral Home, Pulaski.

Irene Hall Roseberry (03-05-2010)
Irene Hall Roseberry, 87, of Pulaski died Monday evening March 1, 2010 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski County on June 14, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Ezra D. Hall and Mollie Altizer Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Alexander Roseberry, Jr., and by two brothers, Cecil E. Hall and Marvin E. Hall.
Surviving are: Daughter & Son-in-Law - Bonnie & Carl Kemp, Draper; Son & Daughter-in-Law - Calvin A. "Sonny" Roseberry, III and Suzanne Roseberry, Groveland, Fla., Sister - Kathleen Ratcliffe, Pulaski; Four Granddaughters & a Spouse - Carla K. & Scott Abshire, Kingsport, TN; Meg Rice, Kingsport, TN; Dr. Chaffin Roseberry, Groveton, GA; Elizabeth Bakkal, Groveton, GA; Two Greatgrandchildren - Madison Rice, Kingsport, TN; and Audrey Willis, Groveton, GA.
Mrs. Roseberry will be cremated.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 at 7:00 PM from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Johnny Howlett and Rev. Dwight Haynes officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from the funeral home from 6:00 PM until the service hour. Burial will follow at a later date from Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

Selma Hill Hall, 84, of Pulaski, VA passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in the Pulaski Health & Rehab Center, Pulaski.

Juanita Martin Lovern (03-03-2010)
Juanita Martin Lovern, age 80 of Dublin, went home to be with Jesus on February 27, 2010 at Radford Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Goldbond, VA on November 14, 1929 to the late Robert Frederick and Maude Neice Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Roy Garfield Lovern, as well as one son, Gerald Alvis Lovern and a granddaughter, Brandi Michele Lovern.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Junior and Curtis Martin, and three sisters; Gladys Shaver, Agatha Sanders and Lila Mae Niece. She retired from Dublin Garment after 32 years of service, and had been a member of French's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church for fifty years. She was forever faithful to the Lord. Although the disease took away most of her memories, she never forgot the Lord's Prayer and would recite it every evening before bedtime. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Roy Gary Lovern and wife, Maxine of Fayetteville, NC and Donnie Gene Lovern and wife, Zetta of Dublin, as well as two daughters, Peggy Lovern Mills and Carolyn Lovern Perdue both of Dublin. She also leaves behind ten loving grandchildren; Heather, Anna, Jacqueline, Tanya, Shannon, Michael, Amy, Derek, Christina and Nicky, as well as thirteen great-grand¬children and one great-great-grandchild. Also left to remember her fondly are two brothers, Jimmy Martin and wife, Dolly of Pearisburg and Kermit Martin of Radford and four sisters, Susie Merrix and Marie Snider of Pearisburg; Bonnie Robertson and husband, Felix of Radford and, Linda Perkins and husband, Buster of Pearisburg as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mother was truly a spiritual inspiration to all, who knew her and she sincerely believed in the power of prayer. Never did a night pass without her being on her knees beside her bed praying for all her children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and her church family and friends. For many years she remembered every name and every need. The family would like to take this time to thank all of the wonderful staff at Radford Heath and Rehab, as well as the doctors and nurses at NRV Medical Center ER and Medical Care Unit and Carilion Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and professional dedication while caring for our Mother. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. at French's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Wood and Rev. Billy Akers officiating. Burial in the Newbern Cemetery, Dublin. The visitation will be Tuesday at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family asked you to consider donations in mother's name to Carilion Hospice of Radford, VA or the National Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) in hopes of a cure being found for this terrible disease.
The family will meet and receive friends for a celebration of Mom's life at the home of granddaughter, Amy Hoback, 5897 Jewell Ave., Dublin, VA after the service.

Cecil William Ratliff (03-03-2010)
Cecil William Ratliff, 70, of Pulaski, VA died Saturday night, February 27, 2010 in the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem, VA. He was born in West Virginia on August 10, 1939 and was the son of the late Charles McCoy Ratliff and Nellie Erskin Ratliff. Mr. Ratliff was a retired employee of Quality Tire, Pulaski. Surviving are: Wife - Frances Ratliff; Children - Cecil "Buck" Ratliff, Martha Davis, Eric Ratliff; Five Grandchildren, Two Great-Grandchildren, One Brother, and Four Sisters.
Mr. Ratliff will be cremated. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 7:00 PM from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Mike Laster officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Roger Dale Lyons (03-03-2010)
Roger Dale Lyons, 63, of Dublin, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010. He was an employee of Radford University. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Hall Lyons of Dublin; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Dale, Jr. and Amanda Lyons of Elliston, David and Marsha Lyons of Mooresville, NC, and Dustin and Faye Lyons of Dublin; five grandchildren Dylan Wayne Lyons, Kylie Noelle Lyons, Kimberly Brooke Lyons, Brooke Erin Lyons and Ariawyn Lauren Lyons; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Lyons of Dublin and Duane and LouAnn Lyons of Huntsville, AL; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma and Graham Gallimore of Barren Springs, Iris Williams of Dublin, and Anita and Damon Dean of Dublin.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Elder Donnie Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Dorothy Kitts Bopp (03-03-2010)
Dorothy Kitts Bopp of Robinson Tract in Pulaski County, died Sunday February 28, 2010. The sunset of Dorothy's life came peacefully with her three children gathered around her. She was born in Bland County as the first child to the late Stella Burton Kitts and Charles H. Kitts. In her early years, she was a second mother to her two sisters, Nancy K. Bradshaw of Ridgeway and June K. Leftwich of Bassett. She graduated from Willis High School, moved to Bassett with her parents and worked at DuPont in Martinsville. She later married Carl Anthony Bopp and moved to Pulaski to make her permanent home on Robinson Tract. She owned and operated the Gator Mart Grocery Store on Robinson Tract Road for many years, and was of the Episcopal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Anthony Bopp. Her three children are Sue Anthony Bopp of Chester, Charles R. Bopp and his wife Kathy of Pulaski and Lynn Bopp Huff of Roanoke. She was grandmother “Nannie” to Erin August Craig, Robert and Rebecca Bopp, and the great-grandmother of six: Hannah Laurel, Lucas Anthony and Allyson Grace Bopp; and John Wyatt, Caroline August and Anna Katherine Craig. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday March 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visiting will be held Wednesday at the funeral home from 12 Noon until 2:00 p.m., where her family requests that her many friends join them. Bonnie Sue Arnold (03-03-2010)
Bonnie Sue Arnold, age 70 of Dublin passed away Monday, March 1, 2010 in the New River Valley Medical Center. Born February 8, 1940 in Wythe County, she is the daughter of Rebecca Harmon Arnold and the late Oakley Arnold. She was also preceded in death by one brother, James Eugene Arnold. Surviving are: Daughter Melissa Arnold-Dublin; Mother Rebecca Harmon Arnold-Dublin; Sisters & Brothers-in-law Joyce & Guy Lee Eller-Dublin; Sarah & Homer Horton –Dublin; Brothers & Sisters-in-law Troy & Mary Arnold-Pulaski; Donald & Alberta Arnold-Dublin.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski with Pastor Michael Collins officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be Thursday 10:30 a.m. at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.
