Host families needed for baseball team

PULASKI — Wanted: host families or short-term leases.

The Town of Pulaski is looking for families willing to host a baseball player for about three months each summer, in hopes of getting minor-league baseball back into the community next summer.
Economic Development Director John White said the town needs about 20 families who are willing to provide accommodations to one or more players; or people willing to provide short-term, low cost leases for players.
White told the town’s Economic Development Committee Wednesday that he thought the prospects of baseball returning to Pulaski for 2008 were dead earlier this week, but now it appears three teams may be showing some interest in setting up camp at Calfee Park.
However, one obstacle the town faces in drawing in and keeping teams, he noted, is the lack of sufficient accommodations for the players, most of which are “right out of high school.”
Years ago, host families provided most of the accommodations for the players, according to White and Town Manager John Hawley. Since it is difficult to find people willing to assign a three-month lease, the town would like to return to the use of host families.
Hawley pointed out at a Northeast quadrant meeting Tuesday night that the players are kept busy with the playing schedule and are often gone for a week at a time, traveling to away games.
Anyone willing to host one or more players should call the town at 994-8600.White said having a minor-league team is important to the town’s economy because it serves as a means to draw people into the town.
