County names new superintendent

The Pulaski County School Board unanimously selected Dr. Robert T. Becker as the new superintendent of Pulaski County schools during the Monday, March 15 school board meeting.

Dr. Becker will fill the seat vacated by the retirement of Dr. Donald Stowers on Jan. 1, 2010. Dr. Thomas Brewster, Assistant Superintendent for Administration, has served as the Interim Superintendent since Stowers' retirement.
"I would like to thank you, the school board, for your vote of confidence in naming me as your superintendent," Dr. Becker stated after the announcement was made.
According to a press release handed out by the school board, prior to coming to Pulaski County, Dr. Becker was the Assistant Superintendent for Operations with the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, in Williamsburg, VA. Dr. Becker started his career in education as a high school teacher in Brigham City, Utah.
Dr. Becker brings to Pulaski County a wealth of successful experience in education. While working with Dr. Gary S. Mathews, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools Superintendent, they implemented educational program improvements leading to four years of improvement in Williamsburg SOL performance, culminating with achievement scores of 90 or better in each SOL category and reducing the achievement gap. Becker earned his Doctorate of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. He earned his Master of Education degree from Central Michigan University and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saginaw Valley State College.
Dr. Becker has been married to his wife Joan for 32 years and they have four children and five grandchildren. Two of his daughters graduated as teachers. He enjoys participating in athletics, working in stained glass, reading, writing, and enjoying the out of doors.
Concerning the task ahead of him, Dr. Becker stated that "I want to get to know this community. I think we can create the future in education here in Pulaski County."
Dr. Becker will take over as Superintendent of Pulaski County Public Schools on July 1, 2010.
