A new rebate program implemented at Pepper’s Ferry Regional Wastewater Treatment Authority last week already has returned more than $180,000 to the jurisdictions it serves.
Executive Director Clarke Wallcraft said just under $135,224 in treatment rebates were applied to the jurisdictions’ bills during the February billing alone. When combined with nearly $50,000 in unbilled recycled flow charges, that brings the total savings to just over $180,000 for the first month of the program.
Wallcraft expects the program to result in up to $700,000 in savings to the jurisdictions through the end of the year, when it is set to expire.
The Authority is not issuing rebate checks to the jurisdictions, but is, instead, reducing each locality’s monthly bill by the appropriate amount. It will be up to the individual jurisdictions to decide whether to pass the savings on to its customers.
The Towns of Pulaski and Dublin, Pulaski County Public Service Authority, Montgomery County Public Service Authority, the City of Radford and Pulaski County Sewerage Authority (Fairlawn) are served by Pepper’s Ferry.
The program can stop the rebates at any time should drought conditions return.
Under the program Wallcraft developed, rebates will be applied to each jurisdiction’s bill based on the percentage of flow for which the jurisdiction is billed monthly. The percentage of rebate will be calculated based on the total flows into the plant during the billing month.
