Sinkland Farms at Riner will hold a “Punkin Chunkin” this weekend, featuring a world champion pumpkin catapulting team from North Carolina.

Team Carbo from Raleigh, N.C. will attempt to beat its own record in distance during pumpkin catapulting demonstrations held this Saturday and Sunday as part of Sinkland Farms’ 16th Annual Pumpkin Festival, which opened Sept. 26 and is held each weekend through Nov. 8.
In addition to the Punkin Chunkin, the festival also features the state’s oldest corn maze, food, music, hayrides, as well as machinery and animal exhibits.
The festival is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. The 10-foot-tall corn maze, depicting a five-acre Halloween cat, also is open 5-8 p.m. on weekends.
Besides the Punkin Chunkin, this year’s festival features several new activities, including demonstrations of apple butter making on Oct. 17, 24 and 31; and Chateau Morrisette Chef Bob Butterworth will be serving his legendary grilled rib dinners Oct. 17 and 24 from 5-8 p.m.
On Halloween, Oct. 31, Boy Scout Troop 348 will host its own local Punkin Chunkin Invitational during the festival; storytelling will be held 2-4 p.m.; and the annual Costume Parade, open to children, adults and animals, begins at 1 p.m.
Hayrides may be taken to the pumpkin patch, which is located on 12 acres backed by the Blue Ridge Mountains and provides a good opportunity for photographs. Those looking to purchase a pumpkin can either buy a pre-picked fruit or select their own. Squash and gourds also are available.
Other features of the festival include pony and carriage rides, barnyard animals, face painting, arts and crafts vendors, plus homemade southern style food and ice cream.
Musical entertainment includes blues, country and bluegrass.
